In this epic multiplayer-focused game, players can choose to defend humanity as a part of the Global Defense Force (GDF) or destroy it as a merciless Strogg alien invader. Players battle as one of five unique classes in either the conventionally armed GDF army or the futuristic Strogg invasion force, each outfitted with specialist weapons and combat hardware. In this adrenaline pumping fight for survival, warring forces utilize a variety of different vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems including quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to unleash airborne attacks. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the opponent. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars features 16-player battles on the console systems, delivering the ultimate team-and objective-based multiplayer experience. [Activision/id Software]

Game Chronicles
Enemy Territory is the very definition of tactical warfare and its objective-base design and multiple classes will keep you playing longer than any other game in the genre.

Worth Playing
It's tempting to knock it down into niche fodder, but overall, the title is too well designed, and with too much potential to appeal to a broad range of shooter fans who bother to really dig into it, for such cavalier dismissal.

First-person shooter multiplayer fans love their battles massive and overwhelming and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars delivers it despite a few setbacks.

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars makes the jump to consoles well although it's not perfectly intact.

While it's not the next evolution of competitive FPS by any stretch of the imagination, a clean frontend with good party support and matchmaking at least lets those players who can forgive its faults an easy way to play the game the way it was meant to be.

What Enemy Territory: Quake Wars ends up being is a FPS with solid core gameplay of guns, vehicles, and equipment.

The graphics are worse, joypads are a poor substitute for keyboard and mouse control, online play is laggier and there aren’t enough people playing. And to rub it all in, you can pick the PC version for a good deal cheaper.

PS3 owners have access to what is essentially the same game, but it's just nowhere near as polished, and as such can't be recommended above the console's current online multiplayer leaders.

But even the best programming can't save this game from the flaws in its design. There's nothing horribly wrong with it, but it also fails to bring anything remotely new or original to the genre.

Finally, the move to the consoles should make this game available to many more people, but it costs twice as much as it does for PC and isn't as good.

In terms of value alone, it's difficult to recommend Quake Wars. You'll love the giant sandbox filled with such distinct classes, high-tech weaponry, and attack vehicles. But when limited to only 16 players on just 12 maps, the gameplay is one-dimensional.

And with the lack of a story and a bunch of random objectives that dont mean a damn thing, moving through the single-player campaign is, sadly, a waste of time.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars had the right idea, but this war might be a little too much for the mighty army of the Strogg.

Ugly, dated and very user-unfriendly. That it arrived in the office the same week as Battlefield: Bad Company only emphasised its inferiority. Bad Company may not be great value, but it is high quality and well tailored to the PS3. This is neither.

When you're making a game that's purely designed for online play, you have to make sure the basics are in place, and the frame rate is the fundamental factor in all shooters, but in Quake Wars it's all over the place, which is a shame.

A bit of a disappointment. It’s a great game on the PC that lost some luster thanks to a less than ambitious porting job. Still, it’s a good game, providing you can get over that initial difficulty hump and you have a solid group of friends to play with.

Territory Wars isn't fundamentally broken, it's just not much fun. [July 2008, p.94]

The vehicles in the game are kind of clumsy, especially the planes. Instead of gaining speed with jeeps and quads, you're better of by foot.

It's too bad that the conversion of Quake Wars didn't go smoother. The gameplay, while fun on PC, was clearly better-suited for the world of a keyboard and mouse combo than a controller.

Ugly as sin, with clunky mechanics to boot. Not great value compared to other PS3 shooters. [July 2008, p.87]

The last disappointing aspect of the game is the full-blown price tag. At $60 I'd expect to get a hell of a lot more than 12 maps and 5 different classes, but that is exactly what you're getting here.

We're disappointed, because Quake Wars could have been a great FPS, but it's one marred with visual issues, some badly realised mechanics and crucial missing menu options that would have gone some way to fixing the issues people clearly seem to be having online.

Should you buy Quake Wars for PS3? Probably not. Should rent it? Maybe, but seeing as how I mentioned there are a slew of better shooters on the platform; make absolutely sure you want to play this before spending any money on it above $15.

While Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was a great success on the PC, it flounders on the Playstation 3, with uninteresting gameplay and disappointing graphics. Add to the mix a confusing control system and unintelligent AI, and you’ve got a perfect mix for disaster.
